But that was Rishi… he was like a pop song you thought you couldn’t stand, but found yourself humming in the shower anyway

SummaryWhen Dimple Met Rishi

Dimple Shah has it all figured out. With graduation behind her, she’s more than ready for a break from her family, from Mamma’s inexplicable obsession with her finding the “Ideal Indian Husband.” Ugh. Dimple knows they must respect her principles on some level, though. If they truly believed she needed a husband right now, they wouldn’t have paid for her to attend a summer program for aspiring web developers…right?

Rishi Patel is a hopeless romantic. So when his parents tell him that his future wife will be attending the same summer program as him—wherein he’ll have to woo her—he’s totally on board. Because as silly as it sounds to most people in his life, Rishi wants to be arranged, believes in the power of tradition, stability, and being a part of something much bigger than himself.

The Shahs and Patels didn’t mean to start turning the wheels on this “suggested arrangement” so early in their children’s lives, but when they noticed them both gravitate toward the same summer program, they figured, Why not?

Dimple and Rishi may think they have each other figured out. But when opposites clash, love works hard to prove itself in the most unexpected ways.” – Goodreads

The Review

After reading and enjoying Sandhya Menon’s From Twinkle, With Love, I decided to give When Dimple Met Rishi a try. When Dimple Met Rishi is a cute and light summer read. Although I found the plot predictable, I really enjoyed watching the romance simmer between Dimple and Rishi.

Dimple Shah’s has always dreamed of becoming a professional coder and creating the perfect app that will draw in her idol, Jenny Lindt’s, attention. She wants nothing more than to escape from her mother’s obsession with finding her the perfect Indian husband. When Dimple’s parents miraculously allow her to attend Insomnia Con in San Francisco, Dimple sees this as her chance to prove to her parents just how serious she is about coding and web design.

Rishi Patel has always wanted to have a marriage as perfect as his parents’. Once Rishi is given the photo of his future wife, Dimple Shah, he can’t wait to begin planning their perfect lives together. Rishi then decides to attend Insomnia Con in order to meet Dimple. Armed with romantic fantasies, Rishi dives head first into Dimple’s life only to be met with an ice coffee to his face. When Dimple met Rishi, fate couldn’t have brought together such a mixed matched pair.

When Dimple Met Rishi was completely different from all the other contemporary young adult novels I have read. It was nice to learn a bit about Indian culture and read about a love story where the girl is more interested about her career than in boys. I found Dimple’s attitude towards Rishi, and to everyone in general, to be a bit harsh at first. It was nice to see how she eventually softened a little. Rishi was completely adorable in his blind admiration for Dimple. I loved how thoughtful he was. If only everyone could be as considerate as Rishi.

The writing is upbeat and keeps the reader engaged. The alternating perspectives of the two main characters were well-done and made them more well-rounded as characters. I also enjoyed the slow burning romance between Dimple and Rishi. There are many YA novels that quickly rush the romance in a romance novel sort of like a train that has quickly run out of steam. I really hope that this book will be turned into a movie someday.

I can’t wait to read the spinoff, There’s Something About Sweetie, which will be released on May 14, 2019.

I would recommend When Dimple Met Rishi to those who want to read a light summer romance.
