I am one of billions. I am stardust gathered fleetingly into form. I will be ungathered. The stardust will go on to be other things someday and I will be free” Days of Blood & Starlight (Daughter of Smoke & Bone book #2) by: Laini Taylor

Initial Thoughts: Immediately after I had finished Daughter of Smoke & Bone, I quickly jumped into reading its sequel Days of Blood & Starlight. The world of angels and chimaera that Laini Taylor created completely took my breath away.cemetery-1655378_1920

The Review

As I am writing about the sequel to Daughter of Smoke & Bone, if you haven’t read the first book, please do not read this review. This review will contain many spoilers for those who haven’t read the first book and I would hate to deprive you of an awesome reading experience.

If you are still here you have either #1 disregarded my warning, or #2 you have already read the first book and want to know if the second one is worth reading. Days of Blood & Starlight takes off right after the first book ended. Karou discovers that she is a resurrected chimaera who was put to death for falling in love with Akiva, an angel. In Karou’s world, angels and chimaera have been at war for centuries. Now that Karou has all of her memories back, she wants nothing to do with Akiva is responsible for murdering her family of chimaera. Instead, Karou decides to join the chimaera army as the resurrectionist. Meanwhile, Akiva returns to his world and decides to save as many chimaeras as possible to atone for his sins.

Most of the events of the first novel is surrounded around Karou and rarely ventures into other perspectives. Days of Blood & Starlight jumps between characters’ perspectives often, usually at a cliff hanger. Whenever a new chapter would begin with another characters’ perspective after experiencing a cliff hanger in the previous chapter, I found myself mentally thinking: “no! I want to know what happens!” This happened a lot. It seemed as if the author delighted in keeping her readers in constant suspense. I also found that this book, unlike the first book, has a lot more action and fight scenes creating for an overall darker atmosphere. The action sequences are intense and unpredictable and kept me on my toes. If I had more time on my hands, I would have loved to have read the book from cover to cover within a day. Instead, the book took me a week to finish because I have been so busy with other things.

Days of Blood & Starlight also includes brand new characters thrown into the mix. I absolutely adore Ziri and hope that he will have a happily ever after at the end of the series. The characters from Daughter of Smoke & Bone who feature in this novel are given an even greater depth. I really liked how the author handled Karou’s transition into the role of ressurectionist. Karou is a great young adult heroine who can hold her own in a fight. She doesn’t need prince charming or angels to come an save her. She is definitely a unique and unforgettable heroine with her blue hair and martial arts training.

After being in a reading slump where the last five novels I have read have either been terrible or just okay, I feel as if I have been reinvigorated with the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy. I have currently begun the third book, and I am devouring every word and sentence. I would recommend this book to those who loved the first book, (you won’t be disappointed). I would also recommend reading Night of Cake & Puppets, which is a novella about how Zuzana and Mik become a couple. It is really sweet and funny.

Final Rating:

A Excellent
