In my last post I compared the movies Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Both of these movies are among my favorites! Did you know that there is such thing as Wonka brand chocolates and candies?

The Wonka brand is owned by the company Nestlé. Nestlé chocolates include Aero bars, Coffee Crisp (my favorite), Kit Kat, Smarties and more! The Wonka brand sells chocolate and candy all around the world such as the United States, Canada, the U.K, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Africa, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Costa Rica, Panama, and the Middle East.

The Products:

The Wonka bar – inspired by the original movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. These chocolate bars consisted of graham cracker dipped in milk chocolate. This product was sold in the United States until it was discontinued in 2010. In 2005 as a promotion tactic, 5 golden tickets were placed in Wonka bars. The winners of the golden tickets had the chance to tour the Nestle chocolate factory. There are many variations of the Wonka chocolate bar that is still in existence (depends on the country) which includes:,Whipple Scrumptious Caramel Delight, and Mysterious Spit-Bat Bar [Japan];  Millionaire’s Shortbread, and Chocolate Nice Cream [United Kingdom];  Wonka Triple Chocolate Whipple Bar, Nutty Crunchilicious, Caramel Hat Trick, and Chocolate Tales Bar [Australia and New Zealand].

SONY DSCBottle caps – these candies are in the shape of flattened metal bottle caps and taste a little like Rockets (sort of sour and tart). The flavours are grape, cola, orange, root beer, and cherry.

Nerds – MSONY DSCy favorite of the Wonka candies. These little candies are in the shape of tiny crunchy sugary pebbles. They come in the following flavors: Strawberry and Grape (pink and purple) [as shown in the picture to the left], Wild Cherry and Watermelon (orange, or red and green), Double Dipped Lemonade- Wilde Cherry and Apple-Watermelon (red and yellow), Tropical Punch and Road Rash Raspberry (red and blue), Wildberry and Peach (blue and orange), Watermelon and punch and Wildberry (green and blue). I have tried strawberry, grape, lemonade wild cherry, watermelon, wildberry and peach. My favorite is the lemonade wild cherry and watermelon nerds, but they are hard to find. Stawberry and grape is most likely the most common type sold in Canada.

Pixy Stix – In order words, a long tube of flavored sugar. Pixy sticks come in grape, maui punch, orange and cherry.

gobstopper-pileEverlasting Gobstopper – This is one of the few candies produced by Wonka that is actually featured in the movie. In the movie these jawbreakers are not supposed to get any smaller. In real life.. well… they do…. The Everlasting Gobstopper comes in a small rectangular cardboard packet. Each gobstopper is roughly the size of a marble. The flavors/colors are:

  • Orange – yellow (lemon) – pink
  • Red (cherry) – orange  – pink
  • Yellow (lemon) – orange – pink
  • Green (watermelon) – Purple (grape) – pink
  • Purple (grape) – pink (strawberry)

SONY DSCFun Dip – Otherwise known as a parent’s worst nightmare. Fun dip was often given out as a party favor whenever I went to birthday parties as a child. Parents usually hated fun dip because they turned a perfectly sweet and innocent child into a Taz the Tasmanian devil from Bugs Bunny. Fun dip is made out of the same sugary substance as the pixy stix, however there is more of it. There are two edible candy sticks included in the package used to pick up the flavored sugar. There are three standard flavors per package: cherry, grape and raspberry/apple.

SONY DSCLaffy Taffy – Each candy is individually wrapped pieces of taffy available in many colors and flavors. On each package there are jokes, riddles, or puns.

original_runts_1982Runts – These small candies are in the shape of fruits and can be found in many vending machines. The outer layer is smooth and glossy, while the inner layer has the same texture and taste as SweeTarts.

SONY DSCSweeTarts – Last but not least, SweeTarts. These candies are “tart” (sour) and have the same texture and taste as Rockets except they are larger.
