Happy Canada Day!

Most people around the world have many misconceptions about Canada. Some of these misconceptions include: Canadians live in Igloos, have polar bears as pets, and say “Eh!” all the time. None of these are true…. though I wish I could have a pet polar bear.

And now without further adieu, let’s start at the basics….

Canada is a country in North America stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic. Despite being the second biggest country in the world, Canada has a population of 35 million.

And now for some things you may not know about Canada….

  • Canada has 9% of the world’s renewable water supply
  • Half of the country is covered with forests
  • Almost half of the population in Canada were born in other countries.
  • The coldest temperature ever recorded in Canada was -63C

Canadian food

What do Canadians usually eat?

Canadian cuisine resembles closely that of Europe and the United States. Though Canada does have its own scrumptious creations. For instance:

Poutine

At first glance, it does not look appetizing. Though once you have sampled the warmth of the fries dripping with flavourful gravy and cheese curds, you can never go back.

Tim Hortons

Tim Hortons is a Canadian based company primarily serving coffee. Most Canadians cannot function without going to “Tims” at least once a day. Tim Hortons also produces “Tim Bits” which are small round donuts. Eating “Tim Bits” while watching a hockey game along with a cup of hot chocolate makes the game all the more memorable.

Kraft Dinner

It surprised me that many countries do not experience the joy of having kraft dinner for lunch as a kid. Basically, kraft dinner is macaroni and cheese with powdered cheese instead of regular grated cheese.

Donair

If you ever find yourself in the Maritimes, you might want to try one of these! A donair consists of donair meat (beef with spices), donair sauce (a sort of sweet garlic sauce), tomatoes, onions (hold the onions please!), and sometimes cheese.
